Parent/Child Swim Lessons

Waterbaby
Classes are taught as a combined class with the parent accompanying the child in the water. Skills are introduced at the child’s developmental level and build as the child progresses. Instructors familiarize children with water,
using play and songs to make the process
more enjoyable and effective.
Pre-School Swim Lessons
30 minutes
3-5 years

This is a child’s first experience in the pool without parental assistance. They are taught the basic skills that are the building blocks of swimming, pool safety, boating safety and the use of personal floating devices. Class participants are divided into skill levels. Class size is small so that the instructor can provide children with individual attention. A minimum of 3 participants needed for all group swim lessons.
Pike-Beginner/Non-Swimmer
Children adjust to the water and develop independent movement. Includes basic stroke and kicking skills, floating and pool safety.
Eel-Intermediate Beginner
For children who are comfortable in the water and able to swim five feet with faces in the water and no flotation device. Children are taught to float, kick and perform progressive arm movements across the pool.
Ray/Starfish-Advanced Beginner
For children who can swim 15 feet with faces in the water and no flotation device. Reviews and improves stroke skills on front, back and side, builds endurance and teaches treading water skills.
Youth Swim Lessons
45 minutes
6-12 years
$30 member/$55 general public
These lessons follow the National Y Youth Swim Lesson format: 5 levels of progressively challenging Y swim classes covering all the strokes and safety skills. A minimum of 3 participants needed for all group swim lessons.
Polliwog-Beginner
Swim placement required if you have not taken Y swim lesson in the last year. Beginner level for those uncomfortable or inexperienced in the water. Includes basic water skills such as gliding with face in water, floating and kicking.
Guppy-Advanced Beginner
Swim placement required if you have not taken Y swim lesson in the last year. For children able to swim 20 feet without a flotation device. Includes swimming on front, back and side and taking a breath while swimming.
Minnow-Intermediate
Swim placement required if you have not taken a Y swim lesson in the last year. For children able to swim 25 yards on front and back, with or without a flotation device. Teaches front crawl with rotary breathing, backstroke, sidestroke and beginning breaststroke.
Fish/Flying Fish-Advanced
Swim placement required if you have not taken a Y swim lesson in the last year. For children able to swim 50 yards front crawl with rotary breathing, back crawl, sidestroke and rudimentary breaststroke. Refines breast stroke, teaches butterfly, open turns and improves other strokes.
Open Swim
You have the opportunity at this to play, water walk, exercise or swim laps. Adults must accompany children age 5 and under. Children under the age 10 must have an adult on the pool deck with them.
Private Swim Lessons
All levels and ages
Students work on basic swimming skills appropriate for their ability and in accordance with their individual goals. Water safety is stressed to all participants. Lessons are 45 minutes in length. Lessons are arranged to fit your schedule, based on pool availability.

Swim Challenge
100 Mile Swim Challenge
Ages 12 and up
January 7-June 7. Jump in and get in shape with our 100 Mile Swim Challenge! Simply keep track of the laps you swim during each workout at the Y and record your yardage/mileage. When you reach 100 miles, you will receive a T-shirt and a medal! Can’t make it to 100 miles? Prizes awarded for 50 miles and 30 miles.
How many laps is a mile?
Length = One end of the pool to other (25 yds)
Lap = Down and back (50 yards)
1 mile = 1,650 yards = Approx. 66 lengths or 33 laps
Goal=100 miles=165,000 yrds or 3,300 laps!
How can you get to 100 miles?
It’s as easy as:

2 miles a week equals 100 miles in about 50 weeks

3 miles a week equals 100 miles in about 33 weeks

1 mile a day, 5 days a week, equals 100 miles in 20 weeks
