YMCA of the Northwoods launches LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA
The YMCA of the Northwoods will begin the LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA cancer survivor exercise program on Monday, January 30 to help adult cancer survivors who have become de-conditioned from recent cancer treatments rebuild strength and stamina. The program will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:00-4:00PM for twelve weeks.
The Y and LIVESTRONG® joined together to create LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA, a physical activity and well-being program designed to help adult cancer survivors achieve their holistic health goals. The research-based program offers people affected by cancer a safe, supportive environment to participate in physical and social activities focused on strengthening the whole person.
“Participants work with Y staff trained in supportive cancer care to achieve their goals” said Marilyn Duschl, program coordinator. “Individual goals such as building muscle mass and strength; increasing flexibility and endurance; and improving confidence and self-esteem will be the focus of this 12 week program” continues Duschl. By focusing on the whole person and not the disease, LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA helps people move beyond cancer in spirit, mind and body.
The 12-week program is free. Criteria for participation are:
This program is recommended for individuals who have finished their cancer treatment recently, unless it is ongoing, or are survivors looking to regain health and improve quality of life. Contact Marilyn Duschl at 715-362-9622 x118 for more information..

Eagle River YMCA Center Adds Additional Date for Power Beats Class
After offering free Power Beats classes to raise interest in this fun, new way to exercise, the YMCA has responded to requests to offer the class in the morning in addition to the Tuesday 4:30PM class. Class is now offered Thursday mornings at 9:00AM in the Health/Fitness Class room at the Eagle River YMCA located in the Northland Pines High School.
Most people have never heard of Power Beats and have no idea what they’re missing! The class uses drum sticks on stability balls and drum to the beat of awesome music. By doing so, the participants increase their muscle strength and endurance in their arms. By changing positions and levels during class, participants get lower body strength, endurance and a challenge to their core.
This exciting class would be an excellent way for families to exercise together, much like the popular home video games. We have a multi age Power Beats class on Tuesdays at 3:30 pm. With group exercise prices slashed to just $10, it’s hard to imagine a more economical way to get family time fun and exercise all at the same time.
Call 715-479-9500 to reserve your spot, or just stop in at class time and join in the fun.
