Say Please & Thank You: Child Behavior Challenge
Politeness counts! For us, manners and empathy are part of the code of conduct for living in our world that we as parents must teach and our children must learn. Raising well-mannered children should be a priority for parents. Manners are the basics of learning the difference between right and wrong. Teaching your children what behavior you expect from them is a daily parenting process—part of what can ensure that our world is going to be blessed with caring, polite, respectful kids instead of those who just don't care about anything or anybody but themselves. Today, we can cover the basics, with those three magic words.
Here are some tips for saying please and thank you:
-
Show by example.
This is an exercise for you, as well as your kids! So say please and thank you for every little thing you can think of today. If your child hands you her bottle, say, "Thank you!" If are asking something of your partner, don't forget to add a please at the end. Setting the tone of respect and politeness in the home is where it all starts. Do as I say, not as I do does not apply here!
-
Praise the pleases.
Let your children know how happy it makes you when they are being kind and responsible. Praise your children when they use the words please and thank-you today.
-
Be a broken record.
Keep on reminding your kids throughout the day to say please and thank you. If they ask for a glass of milk, wait for the magic word. If they try to leave the dinner table, call them back and ask them to ask you to PLEASE to be excused.

Say please and thank you everyday. Praise children liberally when they're polite. Correct them when they're not. Give constant reminders to say please and thank you and always remember to be a positive role model.

FIT FOR LIFE Lifestyle Change Program
Through January up to February 6, 2012, the YMCA of the Northwoods Beck Family Center will begin accepting applications for the FIT FOR LIFE Lifestyle Change program.
The FIT FOR LIFE Weight Loss Competition is a 12-week structured exercise program with weekly workouts, challenges, weigh-ins and lifestyle lectures, taking place in February and wrapping up in May. This year’s program will see the addition of individual personal training sessions and body composition analysis. The winners will be the male and female with the greatest percentage weight loss over the twelve weeks.
Last year’s winners lost over 35 pounds each over the twelve weeks, with the greatest weight loss being 55 pounds! As a group the 20 participants lost 387lbs.
Through this program, participants are given the tools to make successful long-term changes in their health and well-being. “The FIT FOR LIFE program has created results year after year, and with subtle changes to the program we are able to see continued success and most importantly results.” says Chris Cook, Wellness Director. “Even though the program is geared towards a weight loss program, it’s more a program which gives you the building blocks to create a healthy lifestyle routine and build relationships that last well beyond the timelines of the program.”
Applications are available at the YMCA of the Northwoods and online. They are due no later than Monday, February 62. Enrollment is limited to 25.
To learn more about the FIT FOR LIFE Competition, contact 715.362.9622x113 or visit www.ymcaofthenorthwoods.org.
