February 19, 2010 – Week 5 Results
We are a full third of the way through the program and our Losers are still going strong. Now they are starting to put all the information they have learned in the first month and making the commitment to stick with it.
A lot of people can stick with a “program” or “diet” for about 4-5 weeks. After that the decision must be made to really make these true lifestyle changes (rather than just sticking to a “program”).
In the lifestyle lectures, participants were asked to face some of the deeper issues that cause the patterns of overeating and self-destruction. Compared to truly facing these personal issues the exercise part is EASY! It can be a painful but monumental decision to face these problems. But it is a decision, no one can make them dig deep and figure out the reasons. Some are ready to hit those issues head on, and some are not yet ready and that’s OK. We offer different levels of support for everyone involved no matter where they are on their lifestyle change journey.
Here are the results for the week 5 weigh-in:

February 10, 2010 - Weeks 3 and 4 Results
One word for the last two weeks… TOUGH. Physically and mentally, our Biggest Losers had a hard time lately. For some it was the injuries, for others it was the mental game with the smallest weight loss yet. A few even were faced with a slight weight gain from the previous week.
Everyone has come through with flying colors, however! This year’s losers are already within a half a pound of reaching the average total weight loss as the entire 12 weeks of last year.

This is the breaking point now. After week 4, the motivation is starting to wear off and now they have to really commit to continue the lifestyle changes they’ve started.
Continue to wish them luck!

February 3, 2010 - Week 2 Results
Week 2 and our Losers are still going strong!
Amidst puddles of sweat and under-the-breath cursing, they are down a total of 167 pounds. Gizmo has dropped 31 pounds since kick off and is in the lead with 8.5% of his initial weight lost. Bear and Lovie and are tied at 6.1% and Otter is down 5.1%.
Better than the weight loss, however, is the fact that most of our Losers are feeling great, eating better, and improving energy. One is even close to getting off blood pressure medication!
Week 2 brought about lots of interval training. In Bootcamp Bree took them through High Intensity Interval training (HIIT) as well as some of the longer, (but no less difficult) moderate interval training. Everything from walking lunges to sprints, bear crawl, and the crabwalk, these folks were working it hard.
Evening classes brought back the steps and more intervals along with some power yoga and circuits.
Next week we’re hitting the low impact exercise – power series here we come!

Week 1 Results
Well, the first week of the 2010 Biggest Losers was a great success!

Total pounds loss for the group to date: 137.6 POUNDS. Average % loss for the group to date: 3.1%
In Bootcamp, Bree didn’t hold much back just because it was the first week. Crabwalks, pushups, wall-sits and a few sprints were a few of things that participants were expected to do in the mornings. Not to mention the relay series that left everyone out of breath.
At night, on Tuesday, Katie and Pam put them all on steps (with three risers!) to go through squats, lunges, and a few intervals. And on Thursday, in the gym, the group did a tough 8-section circuit with a deceptively challenging balance series at the end.
But the hard work has paid off! Together the group has lost almost 140 pounds in just 10 days! They are averaging a 3% weight loss, and about 7 pounds per person.
Bear, Gizmo and Elmo are in the lead with about 5% each, over 10 pounds lost for each of them. Way to go guys!!!
This week, they are working on interval sets – WHEW! It’ll be tough. Good luck to all.

The Beginning - January 15, 2010
The 2010 season of the YMCA of the Northwoods Biggest Loser challenge started off with the January 15th Kick Off!
That night we took individual pictures, 4-site measurements, and an initial weight. Everyone got the starter packet and we all talked about what to expect out the 12-week program. Best of all no one ran out screaming, even after the trainers made it clear the amount of work that is expected from each individual… and it is a LOT of work!
Monday night is the normal weekly weigh in night. This Monday, after the first weekend, the group already lost nearly 50 pounds!!
Tuesday morning was their first Bootcamp with Bree. Sixty minutes of non-stop activity from pushups to sit-ups to crabwalks and jogging – she keeps them busy to build endurance and stamina.
Tuesday evening they got their first Kick It UP! with trainers Pam and Katie. They worked on building strength by working out on the step (with THREE risers each side), doing sets with weights, and of course using their own body weight.
We’ll be posting weekly updates so come back soon and see how the group is doing. If you happen to see them around the Y give ‘em a big high five and wish them luck. This is a great opportunity to start some lifestyle changes and they have a lot of work ahead of them.
